Mauritius
It is unbelievable an island as beautiful as Mauritius could be uninhabited, but it was until the 16th century. Since then, the island is truly a hotspot for biodiversity. After a history of inhabitants from pirates to slaves and the Dutch and English, Mauritius gained independence in 1968. The multicultural society is stable and economically successful thanks to tourism, financial services, telecommunications and even textiles.
Seventy percent of the population is comprised of descendents of Indian laborers that found their way to Mauritius after slavery was abolished in 1835. There are also other cultures from French to Chinese and Muslim. It is not uncommon to see an Indian temple alongside a large French mansion. The cultures here mix quite well and complement one another rather than conflict with one another. This makes visiting Mauritius even more enjoyable.
Mauritius offers amazing food and resorts as well as golfing, mountain climbing, spas, and other activities. There truly is something for everyone’s tastes from the eco-adventurer to the food critic and beach lovers to golfers. This combined with beautiful beaches, warm water, and the third largest reef in the world makes Mauritius a place to visit!
